This is perhaps the most significant pysanka of all in the collection, as it brings home the reality of Russia’s attempts to dominate Ukraine over centuries. This art piece is derived from the 17th century Cossak poem about a red viburnum (kalyna), representing Ukraine’s age-old struggle for independence:

“Oh, in the meadow a red viburnum has bent low.

For some reason, our glorious Ukraine is in sorrow.

We will take that red viburnum, and will raise it up.

And, hey-hey, we will cheer up our glorious Ukraine.”
